November Assignment - Through the Window

I have just closed our October assignment by uploading my last contender image for the tree and sky topic.  Yes it has trees, lots of them, and it does have a bit of sky but I do not think the sky is a strong enough part of the image.  I like the leading line created by the path drawing your eye into the image but there is no clear subject at the end of it.  I was trying to get to a position where that line would draw the eye to an image of the sky but could not find one.  I intend to revisit in a few weeks once the trees lose their leaves and see how different it is and whether I can get sky at the end of the path.

I have archived the Tree and Sky images (unfortunately just Norman and me) to Click Here To View Portfolios.

Through the Window

Given that many of the images I have seen in our various assignments were taken through our apartment windows or from the balconies I decided to make our assignment for November  "Through the Window".  Some suggestions to get you thinking:
  • In order to qualify I think an image needs to clearly demonstrate it has been taken through a window in some way. perhaps by including elements of the window frame, reflections or something ,on the glass (?raindrops).
  • How about stepping back from the window and taking an indoor shot that includes a view through the window.  This would normally be a difficult challenge because of the high dynamic range between indoors and outside but our apartments are themselves quite bright, breaking the usual convention of not taking photographs when the sun is high might make it possible or you could use flash indoors.  Or you may be lucky and have a camera or phone that can take HDR photos (later iPhones do this automatically, some cameras have an HDR setting or you can do it manually (more difficult and requires post production processing).
  • Remember windows are 2 way, you can take images looking out and looking in.
  • It does not have to be your apartment window or even a Wadswick Green window!  Cars have windows
  • Be wary of reflections and distortion if you shoot through glass.  Think of using angles to avoid this or to maximise the reflections if you want to use them as part of the image.
  • Windows can be open or closed.
  • Normal conventions of composition will still apply, framing itself is quite a strong compositional device but the subject that is framed has to be of interest and sufficiently large in the image.
Finally please do not leave it to the end of the month and please try and upload your images to Google Photos by following this link and selecting "Add Photos".  You do not have to have Google Photos installed as you can use your web browser on your phone, tablet or computer by following that link.
