Introduction
Apple has just released a new version (iOS 16) of the iPhone operating system which is available to download and install on iPhones later than iPhone 8. I have been exploring the changes it brings to the iPhone Camera and Photos Apps. There are lots of changes, most of which you will not be aware of as they involve features you probably do not use. One photo editing feature has, however, grabbed my attention as it closely matches one of my preferred styles of output - pure black or white backgrounds.

Lift Subject From Background
Up until now I have had to do this sort of editing away from the iPhone/iPad but a magazine article about the new "Lift Subject From Background" (I hope they did not spend too much money coming up with that nifty title!) feature caught my attention.
I took a quick photo this morning of my favourite subject, Sonny so I can play with this new feature.
Quite a nice image but I really want to show Sonny off in all his glory without any of the background.

This was easier to do than describe so I have recorded my screen to show how it is done
Simply:
- View the photo on iPhone (i.e. in the Photos App).
- Touch and hold the subject you want to isolate:
- The subject will flash, release it and you will be given the opportunity to save or share the image.
- Select Share and Save Image and the cut out image will be saved to your photo roll.
You can also paste the cutout image into a text message or email or drop it into several other applications. While I was experimenting I found some apps showed a white background while others used black. I have yet to find out how to control that, if it can be controlled.
