Textures
How are you getting on with this month's assignment, colour abstracts? I realise it is quite a tough challenge. It encourages you to look differently at a scene in front of you by focusing in on the shades, textures and patterns rather than the whole of a scene. I have just experimented while on a walk down the main drive focusing on the materials and textures to look for potential to meet the brief, I realised back at home that I was mainly looking at monochrome images rather than the world of colour.
Textures, stone, ivy, bark, and gravel.
Trees, wood, stone and metal provide good examples of texture when viewed close up and with side lighting. My favourite from that walk was the following image of a drain cover which had a lot of surface weathering (or what the antique trade would describe as "patina".
The following shot includes a cooperative ladybird which introduces colour into the monochrome image of a fence rail. I had not realised the wing casing was so shiny so did not notice the blown reflection highlight at the time.
Cropping in on that wing casing results in the type of colourful abstract I was looking for but the quality is not good enough because of the level of cropping needed to create the image and the reflection of the sky, I wish I had had my DSLR and macro lens with me.
The walk did provide one potential image that is not immediately obvious, slightly abstract.
Future Meeting Dates
Our last meeting clashed, once again, with the art group though Norman and I were able to share the Village Hall with them. Photography is, after all, an art form! We must avoid the third Thursday in the month so I have shifted all our meetings to the 4th Thursday.
Keep an eye on the club calendar on this blog. Our next meetings are on:
Thur 28 July - Apologies for the typo, the original post said 8 Jul which was a Friday.
Thur 25 August
Both at 10am
Exposure Triangle Cheat Sheet
Remember back to the presentation I gave about the exposure triangle. I have found this "cheat sheet" in Digital Camera World that sums it up in one graphic. A good reference to keep in the back pocket, or on your phone/iPad.
