April/May Assignment and Our Next Meeting
Next Meeting
Our next meeting is scheduled for 3rd Thursday in May, 19 May 1000 in the Royal Arthur Room.
This Month's Assignment
The assignment for this following month is:
“The 4 Ws"
A slight change of tack this month, the idea is for us all to take photographs of the same 4 scenes so that we can compare and contrast differences in technical aspects, composition, and interpretation. The challenge is to take a set of 4 images of the 4 Wadswick Green Ws:
- the “pub sign” at the entrance to the private lane,
- the W water feature,
- the W on the side of the Greenhouse,
- and the W near the back gate,

Getting Ahead of Next Month's Assignment!
One of Norman's images does not quite meet the theme of blossom and spring flowers as he was clearly thinking ahead to the next assignment by photographing the "W" near the rear gate.

The original image, as shot (Click any image to view a larger version) |
This photograph was taken on a bright but overcast day with the light source behind the main subject. The iPad camera was fooled by the brightness of the sky and underexposed the "W". Norman could have corrected this at the time of taking the photograph by touching the screen to set the focus on the wall and adjusting the exposure by sliding his finger up/dowm the slider that would then have appeared next to the yellow box around the focus point.
All is not lost, however, as I have taken the liberty of adjusting the image in post production.

Manipulated image with selective exposure changes. |
I have increased the exposure over the main subject, the wall, and reduced it slightly in the sky. The composition places the main subject at an intersection of the thirds and uses the lines of the flower beds to draw your eye to the subject. There is a lot of grass in the foreground with an annoying yellow streak so I wonder if a slightly stronger composition was available if you had moved slightly to the right and closer to the subject. This may have strengthened the line from the right and reduced a bit of the bare foreground. The image is crying out for foreground interest, it is a pity the crocuses have all gone. I wonder if the gardeners can plant something before we all have a go at this shot.
Let me know if you are interested in learning how to manipulate your photographs in this way and I will include it as a topic for a future meeting.
My Easter Experiment
As you have all probably guessed by now, I like technology and like getting it to automate mundane tasks. I was therefore interested to read last night about a new (well a year old) Canon initiative, image.canon, for wifi enabled Canon cameras, such as my EOS 90D. My camera will now automatically upload my photographs onto the (free) canon cloud service and push them from there to Google Photos and Adobe LightRoom (Cloud), and onto my Mac computer, iPad and iPhone.
My iPhone already does the same on its own.
So as soon as I return home with my camera or iPhone any images I have taken are transferred to all the places I want to view or work on them while I take my coat off and have a cup of coffee.
If this works as promised it will remove a lot of the hassle from my digital workflow.
Update Mon 25 Apr 22
Just because something is technically feasible does not mean it is a necessary advance. Like my Bluetooth enabled coffee machine which allows me to start the coffee brewing remotely from my desk; provided I have previously inserted a coffee pod, placed a mug under the spout, and am willing to walk to the machine to collect the coffee. It may be possible but certainly is not needed.
As it proved to be the case using the wifi on my camera; it took 3 hours to upload/download a memory card full of photographs by wifi while using a card reader attached to my computer took only 3 minutes and the computer was able to select only new images.
