Newsletter Jan 2022

Happy New Year to you all.

Just a reminder that our next meeting is on Thursday 13 January at 1000 in the Royal Arthur Room in the Greenhouse.  The agenda will be:

  • A quick review of Depth of Field theory including a look at last month’s challenge which was to create a pair of tabletop images demonstrating high and low depth of field.  As a reminder, my offering is in the following image (image on Flickr removed).

  • Presentation and discussion on “Composition”

  • Plan next few meetings – what do we want to do?

Depth of Field

Last month’s talk on the Exposure Triangle and Depth of Field (DoF)was quite heavy going (sorry).  In summary the presentation messages were:

  • Bigger fNo/Smaller Aperture/Bigger DoF

  • More of the scene is in focus behind the subject than in front.

  • Optimum focus point is probably a lot closer to you than you think.

A video of the presentation is available:

Composition

We will discuss what we think composition is and why it is important.  In my opinion, good composition is what separates simple memory recording for a few people and works of art that many people will enjoy.

I will state “there are no rules for composition” and then proceed to list and discuss several such rules which sometimes contradict each other.

Future Meetings (New Year Resolutions)

As now is the time for new year resolutions we should at least think where we want our photography to go in the next year.  We can advance in 2 ways; by deepening our existing type of photography, or by widening our knowledge to introduce new types.

I have just started experimenting with panoramic images:  The following is an example from New Year’s Eve made up from 23 individual images.

New Year's Eve Panorama

I want to develop these techniques using SLR and iPhone further and to try something new, probably fine art studio photography.

As a second resolution we should all set ourselves a target of viewing or reading more about photography to determine what we like, what we do not like and possible new avenues to go down.  I suggest reading online, in books, in magazines, or in podcasts.  Not a lot but try dipping in once a week.

And finally let’s try and find an exhibition to go to.
